Phytochemistry overview
- Seed steroids: estrone, 17α-estradiol, and estriol have been identified in Punica granatum seeds, giving the fruit a mild hormone-like profile at physiologic doses.
- Ellagitannins: punicalagin and ellagic acid dominate the peel and juice fraction. Colonic microbiota metabolize these to urolithins (A/B/C), which mediate most systemic effects on inflammation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and endothelial function.
- Punicic acid: a conjugated C18:3 fatty acid concentrated in seed oil, implicated in lipid modulation and cardiometabolic outcomes in animal and small human data.
